District 3 Green Patrol – Community Clean Team Volunteer Event

Sat, Dec 3, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Washington Square Park (corner of Stockton & Union)

greenPlease join me and representatives from our Department of Public Works for the revival of our D3 “Green Patrol” – a community-led effort to help keep our streets tidy.

I’ve seen a lot of comments on here complaining about the cleanliness of our streets. Our 3-1-1 logs show that it’s far and above the most common complaint the City receives, with over 2,000 requests for street and sidewalk cleaning in October alone. I’ve also seen with my own eyes that the problem has worsened over the past several years.

The City has a responsibility to address this problem strategically. I’m working with City departments to find higher level solutions – including requiring locks on garbage bins along priority corridors, hiring additional enforcement staff, and finding funding for “high-tech” trash bins that will notify the City when they are ready for pickup. I’m open to your thoughts and ideas as well.

But we must also come together as a community and show that we’re willing to organize around these strategic solutions. This Saturday is one opportunity for for demonstrating that commitment. It should also be a fun opportunity to meet & greet neighbors, get some coffee, and meet DPW representatives (who will be providing trash bags and trash pickers). Then we’ll walk through streets adjacent to Washington Square Park and tidy up some of the debris from Friday night’s revelry.

I look forward to meeting you and working together on getting our streets clean! Let’s do this!

(By the way, I’m trying to be better about checking in on the chatter on here – please feel free to email my office at peskinstaff@sfgov.org if there’s something I absolutely can’t miss – thanks!)

San Francisco Mime Troupe’s “Schooled”

The San Francisco Mime Troupe’ presents “Schooled” on Sunday, August 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Washington Square Park A brief description of “Schooled” is that education is like the weather: everyone has an opinion but nobody does anything about it. That’s how Livina Jones feels about her son Tom’s new school, Eleanor Roosevelt High. With its old textbooks, crumbling classrooms, and racist treatment of kids just like hers Livina believes Roosevelt is exactly the sort of school that can benefit from a little free-market common sense. The nanny-state government has failed to see students as individuals, and failed to give them the real-world skills they’ll need to get ahead. So who says it isn’t time for some big money, for-profit schooling?

The San Francisco Mime Troupe creates and produces socially relevant theater of the highest professional quality and performs it before the broadest possible audience. To make this work accessible the Mime Troupe performs its shows in local parks at a price everyone can afford: free. musical comedy and political satire. For more information, click here.
